FRANS HALS MUSEUM EN DE HALLEN | Haarlem, NL 2017

FRANS HALS MUSEUM | DE HALLEN

Vision

Under new directorship, with a clear curatorial mission and a fresh identity, Frans Hals Museum | De Hallen Haarlem is embarking on an exciting journey to reestablish itself as one of the most prominent cultural destinations in the Netherlands and beyond. We were approached by SO-IL from New York to team-up and enter the limited competition for the renovation of of both museum locations.

We won the competition with a proposal centred around the idea of acceptance of both locations’ idiosyncratic and sometimes quirky historic conditions, as they align with, and can even amplify, the trans-historical curatorial mission of the museum. Rather than introducing a new over-all aesthetic for both buildings we propose a series of subtle interventions in order to create a ‘collection of rooms’ with diverse identities based on careful consideration on a case-by-case basis. This liberates ourselves from the need of a unifying overhaul.

Identity, flow, visitor experience and practical museum logistics all suffer from convoluted circulation due to a multitude of historical additions and adaptations. Based on careful consideration on a case-by-case basis, we clear out and scrape away these layers to improve the flow of visitors, staff and art. This liberates ourselves from the need of a unifying overhaul.

For both sites we propose a relocation of the entrances in order to introduce a more open and freely accessible public-area. For location Hal this reestablishes the original public function of the Vleeshal, for Hof we move the entrance north and reorganise the shop, cafe and courtyard into one freely accessible public zone. Introducing the concept of a ‘salon’ in both Hof and Hal strengthens the ambition of the museum to bring art to the public.
